Western adventure: True Grit (2010)

This is a brilliant remake of Henry Hathaway’s 1969 original western film starring John Wayne based on Charles Portis’s novel, with Bridges playing a convincing mumbling drunk, who somehow can automatically spring into action, with a surprisingly, hidden soft side. But it was new-comer actress Steinfeld, and her powerful performance of the film’s protagonist, Mattie, who steers the film into the action packed western adventure film that it is.

Synopsis

A head-strong, tough as old boots, fourteen year old, Mattie Ross (Steinfeld), is quick to avenge her father’s recent death by finding the man who murdered him in cold blood, with the help of one-eyed, alcoholic former U.S Marshal Rooster Cogburn (Bridges). To accompany them on this dangerous journey through the frozen Wild West is upright Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Damon), who helps rescue them from some sticky situations. The plot is basic but the Coen brothers create a visual masterpiece with epic scenery and hardened, real Western-style characters with ‘true grit’.
