State Healthcare – My Public Hospital Experience
Groote Schuur Hospital
Public healthcare in our country – where do I start? The very idea of it is synonymous with news reports of patients left to suffer in hospital passages, insufficient facilities and poor medical advice. Last week I booked into my first public hospital, and got to experience what it’s all about, first hand. This is how it went down.
Healthcare in South Africa is a conundrum. The rich can afford medical aid, so can the people living beyond their means every month, but for a typical twenty-something year old who isn’t taking home 30k a month, and whose parents aren’t swimming in money like Scrooge McDuck, what is the answer?

Northern Sotho Wikipedia now an official project
Northern Sotho now has it’s own Wikipedia, becoming the 10th official South African language to do so.
The project has been sitting for many years in the Incubator, where projects that aren’t yet ready are hosted and developed. It was a bit of an anomaly, as even though it was more active than many other South African languages, an official project was never initiated, and the rules later changed, tightening up the qualification criteria. This may have been to its advantage, as with the modest goal of getting the project out of the incubator, there has been more activity,
Minimalism - inbox and stuff
I am a slave to email. It is my communication medium of choice for both receiving and sending. Unlike a phone call, email less unintrusive because I can read it when I'm not busy with something else (yes, I can ignore my phone, but I don't during the day). It is also a format I can keep as a reference or to mull over. And, unlike a phone call, it is there in black and white, not in-one-side-and-out-the-other like phone calls.
I'm compulsive about email and so I read 'em all and I answer 'em all. I especially like to answer all of the day's emails before I go to bed because if I don't, they disappear under the new day's messages.
