Please dehorn our rhino

Yesterday eight rhino bodies were found in Kruger. This brings this 12-day year total to 20 rhino killed for their horns. Indeed, 443 were killed last year - that's more than one per day most of the year. A clip on the news last night showed a baby rhino pacing next to the body of its dead mother.

I'm all for these anti-poaching organisations and there are many funding ventures to support these initiatives. I've got one of Woolies' My Planet cards, linked to the Rhino Fund; this is one of many.

But, I have to question just how effective any of these initiatives are? For as long as rhinos have horns and the Chinese and Vietnamese continue think it will make their willies bigger and stronger...

Goodyear waste treats trash like treasure

A hefty R2.4 million joint investment between Goodyear and its recycling partner, The Waste Trade Company, has turned the tyre manufacturer’s waste yard into a clean, organised and Earth-friendly facility, reflecting the award winning, environmental can-do attitudes of both these companies.

“The generation of waste comes with the tyre manufacturing process; we can’t escape it but we can find the most practical and environmentally friendly ways to manage that waste,” said Pamela Moodley, Goodyear Risk Control Manager.

Table Mountain National Park extends deadline for commercial operators

The initial deadline, 1 December 2011, for the registration of individuals and companies who make use of Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) for commercial activities has been extended by six months to 1 June 2012. These individuals and companies, referred to by TMNP as Commercial Operators, include (but are not limited to) tour operators; tour guides; transport companies; tourist guide training institutions; and adventure sport companies.
