The Bachelor Years

TheFreeDictionary.com defines the word bachelorism as “dedication to the state of being a bachelor” or “behavior typical of a bachelor”. Usually when we hear the word bachelor, we usually think of a promiscuous single guy who desperately needs to get married,

which I don’t entirely think is accurate. Here are my views.

They’re lots of us around: The modern, single guys who are young enough to do it and old enough to do it right, the guys who have been through casual and serious relationships and everything inbetween. We’re in that phase of our lives where we are painting a good picture of who that girl is we’re looking for. We learn from our trials, tribulations and mistakes from our past and cast those learnings forward.

This is a necessary phase in any guy’s life in my opinion. For the record, I disagree with the “no sex before marriage” notion. I don’t think anybody can predict that they will definitely be sexually compatible with their future spouse.

Sexual compatability and chemistry is a biggie – just ask any girl :) What if the sexual chemistry fades within months of being married? It’s a big risk to take for ourselves. I think mate selection is as natural as it is in the animal world. It’s an act which is both primal and sacred at the same time, therefore it’s important to realize that it’s a big part of every “grown-ups” life. I’m sorry if I have ruffled a few feathers among the religious types, but this is the truth and I spit it. Hard.

How does this tie in to bachelorism? Bachelorism goes beyond the single guy sitting at his laptop whilst drinking coffee and writing about it at 12am, it’s about so many things. Mate selection is definitely one of them.

UrbanDictionary.com defines bachelorism as “A prudent, sensible, and wise life-enabling decision to remain single, remain a first class citizen, enjoy relatively high degrees of personal freedom, prosperity, and self-determination“.  It’s a single sentence that can be used to describe an entire period in a guy’s life. I disagree with the decision to remain single though. I mean if Isla Fisher came up to you and begged you to go out with her, you’d be insane to say no. On the other hand, if Lady Gaga came up to me and begged me to go out with her, I’d probably run like hell in the opposite direction for fear of anyone hearing me getting asked out by a tranny.

It’s a healthy balance.
